GTH Modernizes PLCs at a Water Purifying Plant
The customerís old PLC was programmed in the mid-80s, and ran on a GE Fanuc before the upgrade. The new George T. Hall Company (GTH) program that controls the cityís 10 step water purification plant, was rewritten to run the facility with less electro mechanical strain on the equipment during daily operations. This GTH program conversion and retrofit also included four control panels used to increase the efficiency and response time of the filters, pumps, and VFDs.

The Challenge
The outdated Logic Master 5 software was to be replaced with a Unity Pro XL program. The plant operators had been using the Logic Master 5 software running on the GE Fanuc for over 25 years, and could see areas where the facilityís automated controls could be improved. The plan was to replace the Fanuc with an M340Controller that would run a Unity program. This M340 will regulate all local operations of the treatment facility, and has additional communications cards with data transfer capabilities. The four new control panels feature Advantys IO modules to transport signals to the M340 that GTH installed in the Master Control Panel. The overall goal was to create a system with strong, reliable automations that functioned with integrity.

The Team
GTH worked tirelessly to replace the outdated panels, install the M340, and refine the program. Throughout the on-site installation, the input from the water facilityís staff helped GTH enhance the process to work quicker, and more efficiently. Since the GTH Project Manager and field technicians worked closely with the Public Works department, GTH was able to develop and complete a water treatment system in the shortest time possible.

The Solution
Modernization of automated control equipment is necessary to promote a higher quality of life for individuals, and to increase the productivity of industrial operations. GTH leads the market in experience and expertise with controlled automations, and builds strong relationships with customers based on constant communication and moral principles throughout the entire project. GTH has also optimized their design and panel layout process to maximize available space in the cabinet. With this compact design, future improvements can be simple and inexpensive to implement.
